Hamas is dissolving its Government Follow-Up Committee, the executive body that has governed Gaza for nearly 20 years, paving the way for a non-partisan technocratic committee to assume administrative control of the territory, Hamas officials told AFP.
A Hamas official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP that the decision to dissolve the governing committee has been taken. An individual will be appointed by consensus to oversee the committee’s functions until the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG) formally assumes its responsibilities, the official said.
In October last year, Hamas agreed to hand over power in Gaza to a technocratic government proposed by US President Donald Trump as part of US-mediated ceasefire negotiations.
The NCAG has been formed with 15 specialists from various Palestinian factions under the ceasefire agreement. They will manage the day-to-day affairs of the devastated territory during its reconstruction.
