LALMONIRHAT — The government is taking steps to establish sports and culture as respectable professions on a par with other careers, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu said.
Dulu spoke to journalists Friday afternoon, April 24, after inaugurating a Baishakhi fair at the Shaheed Abul Kashem Mahabidyalaya grounds in Barbari, in Lalmonirhat sadar upazila.
The minister said the government has launched a nationwide programme called “Notun Kuri” to recruit a new generation of players. The programme will identify talented young people and provide training and development opportunities, he said.
Dulu said the government plans to establish sports as a profession so young people in the future can take it up as a livelihood.
“Like culture, rural sports are also disappearing under foreign influence. The prime minister has emphasised bringing sports back to the field,” he said. To that end, the government is running programmes from the primary to the university level to revive both sports and rural culture, the minister said.
A two-day Baishakhi festival opened at the Barbari Shaheed Abul Kashem Mahabidyalaya grounds, with competitions in several traditional rural games, a horse race and a cultural evening on the first day.
Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Rashedul Haque Pradhan, Superintendent of Police Asaduzzaman, District Council Administrator A.K.M. Mominul Haque and others were present.
