KABUL — Afghanistan has pulled out of a tri-nation Twenty20 cricket series with Pakistan after Pakistani airstrikes killed three local cricketers, the Afghanistan Cricket Board said.
Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been high in recent days, with the two sides drawn into clashes. The fallout has now reached cricket.
“This attack on our players, citizens and sporting community is unimaginable,” the Afghanistan Cricket Board said. “Out of respect for those killed, we have decided to withdraw from the upcoming tri-nation T20 series.”
Afghanistan has previously toured Pakistan to play in the Asia Cup and the Champions Trophy, but had not played Pakistan there before.
The team was due to play Pakistan on Pakistani soil for the first time. But the clashes between the two countries’ militaries have ended that plan, and the series itself is now in doubt.
The Pakistan Cricket Board has not yet issued a formal response.
