Two years after the election, India’s central government has still not granted Jammu and Kashmir the status of a full state. Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah has sharply criticized the BJP government for the delay in granting full statehood.
At a public rally in Jammu on Sunday, Omar Abdullah said: “Our patience is running out. First they said statehood could not be obtained by raising it in the assembly. Then they said it would not work even if we ran a movement in Jammu and Kashmir. Now they are saying it will not work even if we protest at Jantar Mantar.” He asked the Modi government what could be done to obtain statehood.
He then said: “So must we go to US President Donald Trump this time to have our demand met? Should we then sit on a strike in front of the White House?”
Omar Abdullah announced a movement in the capital, Delhi, until the BJP-led central government clarified the matter. “We will hold protests in the capital and go from door to door,” he said.
Parliament’s monsoon session is due to begin on July 20. A protest program will be held in New Delhi on the first day of the session, he said.
Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated on August 5, 2019, with the abrogation of Article 370 of the constitution. Since then, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh have been two separate union territories. The BJP-led central government had said at the time that Jammu and Kashmir would be given back the status of a state in due course.
