About 100 soldiers of the “Tzabar” battalion of the Israeli army’s Givati Brigade have rebelled against their commanders. They left behind the weapons they were carrying and abandoned the “Sde Teiman” base in the Negev desert. The incident followed a protest arising from anger at the commanders, the Israeli news site Ynet reported, according to Al Jazeera.

According to a spokesperson for the Israeli army, the dispute began when the battalion commander ordered the removal of certain marks or symbols connected with “a number of unusual events in the traditions of the battalion’s old and new soldiers.”

Ynet reported: “According to the battalion’s soldiers, the symbols that were removed had been with them during the fighting in Gaza and Lebanon and had been handed down from one new group of soldiers to the next. The soldiers saw these mementoes as a symbol of their deep emotional connection with the battalion and its traditions.”

Citing a military source who did not wish to be named, the Israeli newspaper Maariv reported that, because of the incident, the battalion had become ineligible to take part in the combat operation in Gaza for which it had been preparing.

The newspaper Israel Hayom reported that the soldiers and commanders left their military equipment and weapons at the base and departed for their homes carrying only their personal bags.
