Three people were killed in a road accident in Kishoreganj’s Katiadi upazila. Five others were seriously injured.
The accident occurred Sunday afternoon at a spot called Tebhaga, in the upazila’s Achmita union, on the Kishoreganj-Bhairab road.
The deceased were Rabeya Khatun, 50, wife of Badiul Alam of Ajmiriganj in Habiganj district; Milon Mia, 30, son of Abdul Mojid of Kolapara village in Kishoreganj’s Tarail upazila; and Milon Mia’s young daughter.
The seriously injured are Bonna Akter, 25; CNG driver Kajol Mia, 30; Badiul Alam, 55; Priya Akter, 20; and Sakibul Hasan, 8.
Given the severity of their injuries, the injured were given initial treatment at Katiadi Upazila Health Complex before being sent to Kishoreganj’s Syed Nazrul Islam Medical College Hospital and Zahurul Islam Medical College Hospital.
Badiul Alam of Ajmiriganj, Habiganj, who was seriously injured in the crash, said his daughter’s father-in-law, Abdul Mojid, had fallen ill and was on his deathbed. He said he and his family had traveled Friday to Kolapara village in Kishoreganj’s Tarail upazila to see him. On Sunday afternoon, he said, they were traveling by CNG auto-rickshaw from Tarail toward their business base in Narsingdi district’s Monohardi when a speeding covered van hit their vehicle. His daughter’s husband, Milon Mia, died at the scene. His wife, Rabeya, and granddaughter, badly injured, were taken to the hospital, where doctors declared them dead. He said he, his daughter Bonna, the CNG driver Kajol Mia, a relative named Priya Akter, and Sakibul were all seriously injured in the crash.
Dr Mohammad Anisur Rahman, the physician on duty at Katiadi Upazila Health Complex, said Milon Mia died at the scene of the crash. The other two victims, Rabeya and Milon’s daughter, were declared dead after examination. He said the five other seriously injured people were given initial treatment and referred elsewhere for advanced care.
Katiadi Highway Police sub-inspector (SI) Rezaul Karim said he and a highway police team were at the scene. The covered van and the CNG-run auto-rickshaw involved in the crash have been seized. He said necessary legal action was under way.
