DHAKA — The proposed budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year will give top priority to education and health, with the government planning significant increases in allocations to develop skilled human resources and drive economic prosperity.
According to Finance Ministry sources, 50,302 crore taka is being estimated for secondary and higher education and 42,145 crore taka for primary and mass education. The combined allocation for the two sectors stands at 92,447 crore taka (about $7.7 billion), which is 9,480 crore taka higher than the current fiscal year.
The Finance Division said education has been placed at the top of the projected expenditure ceiling for the next fiscal year. A total of 3.57 trillion taka has been planned for the top 10 expenditure sectors, up from 3.27 trillion taka in the current year — an increase of 30,170 crore taka in a single year. The secondary and higher education division is set to receive the highest allocation, with an estimated 50,302 crore taka, up from 47,564 crore taka in the current fiscal year — an increase of 2,738 crore taka.
The Ministry of Primary and Mass Education is being allocated 42,145 crore taka, and the Ministry of Science and Technology 18,077 crore taka, sources said.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman told Parliament that 43 areas of the education sector have been identified, with short, medium and long-term plans being implemented. He also outlined plans to establish technical schools and colleges in every upazila and polytechnic institutes in every district in phases.
The prime minister said the current democratic government considers education the nation’s best investment and is committed to building a quality, life-oriented and inclusive education system. The election manifesto outlined plans to gradually raise education spending to 5 percent of GDP. In line with that, 43 areas of education have been identified for short, medium and long-term implementation.
