Argentina coach in two minds over lineup

Argentina are busy with last-minute training before taking the field against Austria in Group J. But Lionel Scaloni has still not finalised two decisions over the starting eleven before the next match, TyC Sports reported.

The report said that, while a major change from the lineup that played against Algeria is unlikely, some reshuffling could be seen in attack. Scaloni is thinking of bringing in Nicolás González in place of Thiago Almada. Known for his pace and direct attacking football, González could exploit the spaces created by the opponents’ high-pressing tactics — the reason the coaching staff want to make this decision.

Another question being weighed is at centre-forward. Julián Álvarez could get a chance in place of Lautaro Martínez, who started the first match. In a relief for the team, Gonzalo Montiel has almost recovered from injury. He trained with his teammates on Sunday. He is likely to be on the bench against Austria; if needed, the defender could also take the field, the report claimed.

There is no sign of any major change in defence or midfield. Emiliano Martínez will be in goal. The report also said the places of Cristian Romero, Lisandro Martínez and Facundo Medina in defence are almost certain. In midfield, Scaloni is planning with Rodrigo De Paul, Enzo Fernández and Alexis Mac Allister.

Meanwhile, Leandro Paredes and Nicolás Tagliafico, who did not play in the first match, are also gradually becoming fully fit. If they keep improving steadily in training, Scaloni could also field them against Austria.

Argentina take the field against Austria in Dallas at 11 p.m. Bangladesh time on Monday. A win in that match would take the defending champions a step closer to the knockout round.
