Could football’s two fiercest rivals of all time, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, take the field for the same team? That question has become a major talking point among fans worldwide. A report by Argentine outlet TNT Sports says plans are underway to make this seemingly impossible scenario happen at Carlos Tevez’s farewell match.
The farewell tribute match for Tevez, known as “El Apache,” capping his storied career, is expected to take place this December. Tevez has already held several meetings with Boca Juniors’ management. His wish is to have the two footballing greats, Messi and Ronaldo, play together in the same starting lineup for the special occasion.
Throughout his career, Tevez played for many of world football’s biggest clubs. He wore the jerseys of Manchester United, Juventus and Argentina alongside Messi, and also played for Manchester City. During his time at United, he also shared a dressing room with Cristiano Ronaldo. It is believed that around 60 former teammates from around the world will take part in his historic farewell match.
The forward, who retired from professional football in June 2022, has since taken up coaching. After stints at Rosario Central and Independiente, he currently manages Talleres de Cordoba. But amid his coaching duties, his full attention is now on organizing this historic farewell event.
If all goes according to plan, the exhibition match could be held at Boca Juniors’ famous home ground, La Bombonera, on either Dec. 12-13 or Dec. 18-19. Club officials are also taking care to ensure the match date does not clash with the Argentine league schedule.
