The United States has announced it will try to make Iran’s assets available for the reconstruction and repair of damage to Gulf countries, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters. The plan emerged after Iran carried out several attacks on Kuwait and Bahrain and amid a fresh series of drone launches. The source said US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had directed a team to make a financial assessment of the damage already done to Gulf allies by Iran’s attacks, and that using Iranian assets to provide compensation in the event of possible future destruction was also being considered.

The information emerged at a time when Mohsen Rezai, an adviser to Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, told CNN that one condition of a peace deal to end the three-month war with the United States was the release of 24 billion dollars of Iranian assets frozen in the US. The decision could put new pressure on the fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran. Clashes between the two sides have recently risen again and peace talks have effectively stalled, although a minister from mediator Pakistan visited Tehran on Saturday and delivered a letter to Iran’s supreme leader.

Earlier, on Saturday morning, US forces struck Iranian coastal radar installations, including targets on Gorukh and Qeshm islands inside the Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command said it had shot down several drones launched from Iran that were threatening commercial shipping, and that two more Iranian offensive drones were later shot down. Iran then said it had carried out ballistic-missile attacks on US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain, but the US military claimed six missiles were intercepted and a seventh missed its target. Iranian state media said Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsen Naqvi arrived in Tehran on Saturday and met officials including Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi; Naqvi said he was carrying a “special letter” from Pakistan’s army chief and prime minister to deliver to Iran’s supreme leader.
