The death toll from a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck eastern Indonesia on Saturday has risen to 38, the country’s disaster management agency has confirmed.
National Disaster Mitigation Agency chief Suharyanto told a press conference: “The deaths of 38 people have been confirmed. Two are seriously injured and 11 have sustained minor injuries.”
He said approximately 2,000 people have voluntarily evacuated to safer locations following the earthquake.
The death toll had been lower in earlier reports. With search and rescue operations continuing, the number of fatalities could rise further, officials said.
