The “Cockroach Janata Party” (CJP) is holding a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of India’s central Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. When CJP founder Abhijit Deepke reached the protest site, the crowd greeted him with slogans of “Bharat Mata ki Jai,” “Inquilab Zindabad” and “Jai Bhim.” The party alleged that Dharmendra Pradhan is “directly responsible” for the leaking of question papers in various national-level exams, according to The Indian Express.
Deepke reached Delhi from the United States early on Saturday. Delhi police gave him permission to hold the protest from 10am to 5pm, and security was tightened across the capital, with additional police deployed outside the residences of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, whose name was cited as the protesters’ main target. The CJP began as a satirical online movement after a remark by India’s Chief Justice Surya Kant, who compared a class of young people to cockroaches at a hearing. Over time it has won the support of various well-known figures, including education reformer and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, and actors Sonakshi Sinha, Dia Mirza and Fatima Sana Shaikh.
