Returning to the FIFA World Cup after 28 years, Norway had delivered a fairy-tale campaign. Although they made history by reaching a World Cup quarterfinal for the first time, the Vikings could not ultimately secure a semifinal place. On Saturday night they lost 2-1 to England in extra time and had to bow out of the tournament.

After the disappointing defeat, the team’s captain and star striker, Erling Haaland, gave a heartfelt message to supporters on social media. On his official X (formerly Twitter) account he wrote: “It was a truly extraordinary journey. Heartfelt thanks to everyone for making our journey so memorable.”

Haaland’s post drew a huge response on social media as soon as it was published.

Although Norway’s World Cup campaign ended in the quarterfinal, the 25-year-old star striker was in superb form throughout the tournament. With seven goals in five matches, he stands third on the list of top scorers, after Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé.

His last-minute brace against Brazil in the round of 16 in particular was one of the most talked-about moments of the tournament. Haaland’s brilliance sent Brazil out of the World Cup before the quarterfinals for the first time since 1990, while Norway, reaching the last eight for the first time in their history, began a new chapter.
