Pakistan’s Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has ordered the suspension of medical and dental education programs for Afghan students in the country.
The directive halts new admissions of Afghan students and suspends the studies of those currently enrolled, effective until further notice.
Afghanistan-based online outlet Khaama Press reported the information, citing an official letter issued by the PMDC.
According to the document, Afghan students currently studying at medical and dental institutions in Pakistan must return to Afghanistan. New admissions of Afghan students to medical and dental programs will also remain suspended until further notice.
The transfer or migration of Afghan students from one medical or dental institution in Pakistan to another has also been banned.
The council said the measure was taken based on policy directives from relevant authorities and a decision made by the PMDC on July 30, 2026. The letter described the matter as an issue tied to national policy and instructed all medical and dental institutions in the country to comply with the directive.
According to the letter, institutions must document and confirm the graduation status and departure from Pakistan of any Afghan students who have already completed their studies.
The PMDC said the directive applies nationwide, not limited to any specific university or institution — covering all public and private medical and dental universities and educational institutions.
According to the document, medical and dental institutions have been asked to submit detailed information about their currently enrolled Afghan students to the PMDC within three days.
The council further warned that delays in providing information, failure to comply with the directive, or concealment of information would be taken seriously, with legal action possible against institutions found in violation.
The PMDC’s decision could create major uncertainty for Afghan students pursuing professional medical and dental degrees in Pakistan. Those currently mid-way through their studies in particular could see their education disrupted and may be forced to leave Pakistan before completing their courses.
The PMDC is the legal regulatory body responsible for overseeing medical and dental education and maintaining educational standards in Pakistan. Institutions are also required to register students admitted to the country’s medical and dental colleges with the council and ensure compliance with admission regulations.
