ISLAMABAD — Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed regional developments and ongoing diplomatic activity in a late-night phone call on Sunday, May 3, with Araghchi praising what he called Pakistan’s constructive role and sincere mediation in resolving the crisis through bilateral talks.
The conversation focused on Pakistan’s peace efforts and the United States’ response to a new peace proposal put forward by Araghchi. Dar said dialogue and diplomacy were the only paths to lasting peace and stability.
The talks came against the backdrop of a new 14-point peace proposal from Tehran. Iran said Washington had sent its response to the proposal through Pakistan, and that Tehran was now reviewing it.
U.S. President Donald Trump said talks with Iran were taking a positive turn that could yield good outcomes for all sides. Discussions between the two countries had largely stalled since a Pakistan-mediated ceasefire took effect on April 8, but the new proposal from Araghchi is now offering fresh hope, officials said.
Sources said the Iranian proposal sets a one-month deadline aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, lifting what Tehran called an unjust U.S. naval blockade and bringing a permanent end to the wars in Iran and Lebanon. The plan would be carried out in three phases to end all combat within 30 days, with a key condition that no party, including Israel, would launch further attacks.
In the first phase, the United States must lift the blockade from Iranian ports, while Tehran would take responsibility for clearing sea mines. A later phase proposes scaling back uranium enrichment to specific limits, but Iran said there is no question of dismantling its nuclear facilities or infrastructure. In return, the United States and Israel must halt attacks on Iran and its allies, and Iran’s frozen funds must be released in stages. In a final phase, Tehran envisions strategic dialogue with Arab states and a region-wide security framework across the Middle East. Throughout the process, the proposal places greater weight on the goodwill of regional countries than on the United Nations or other international bodies.
