Prime minister flies to New York with a party of 35

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman leaves for New York on Monday (September 21) to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. A 35-member delegation is travelling with the prime minister. Regular contact and discussion are also under way with the relevant United States authorities to ensure the security of the prime minister’s visit and of those travelling with him.

The foreign secretary, Asad Alam Siam, gave the information at a press conference at the foreign ministry on Sunday (September 20).

Asked about those travelling with the prime minister, the foreign secretary said the United Nations programme is being given the highest priority on this visit. The number travelling with the prime minister is 35. Among them, the foreign minister and Bangladesh’s permanent representative in Washington will join the prime minister in New York. Four ministers and two political figures are also travelling with him.

On the security of the prime minister and his party, Asad Alam Siam said every necessary measure had been taken. Part of the responsibility for the delegation’s security also rests with the relevant United States authorities. Regular discussions are under way with the United States authorities on the matter so that the security of those travelling can be assured.

Asked how long the prime minister would stay in New York, the foreign secretary said he would stay as long as an effective visit requires. Making proper use of the time matters more than the length of the visit.

Those travelling with the prime minister include the secretary general of Jamiat Ulama-e-Islam Bangladesh, Dr Golam Mohiuddin, and the general secretary of the Revolutionary Workers Party, Saiful Haque. Also on the visit are the finance minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, the civil aviation and tourism minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat, and the law minister Md Asaduzzaman.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is due to address the United Nations General Assembly session in Bengali on September 24. He is then due to leave New York for Dhaka on September 25.
