The measles outbreak in the country continues to worsen. Children are still dying every day. Across the country, eight more children died with measles-like symptoms in the past 24 hours. During the same period, another 1,320 people were newly found with measles symptoms.
The figures were released Wednesday in the Directorate General of Health Services’ regular measles report. This brings the total number of children who have died with measles-like symptoms nationwide, from March 15 through Wednesday, to 944. Over the same period, another 100 children have died from confirmed measles. Altogether, 1,044 children have died from measles or measles-like symptoms.
Bangladesh had once come to the verge of eliminating measles. Instead, it is now facing one of the world’s worst measles outbreaks. In the past 24 hours, 81 more children were newly confirmed with measles, while another 1,239 children were found with measles symptoms. During this period, 1,141 children were hospitalised, and 1,079 children were discharged from hospital after treatment.
According to the health directorate’s figures, the number of suspected measles cases in the country from March 15 through Wednesday stands at 175,198. Of these, 20,282 have been confirmed as measles cases. During this period, a total of 154,420 patients have been hospitalised, and 148,465 have been discharged after treatment.
