After leading Spain to the title at the 2026 World Cup, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has moved to renew coach Luis de la Fuente’s contract. His current deal runs through 2028. However, the federation’s plan is to keep de la Fuente in charge of the national team through the 2030 World Cup.
The 2030 World Cup will be jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco. RFEF has already begun the process of extending de la Fuente’s contract. Federation president Rafael Louzán said having de la Fuente on the world’s biggest stage is extremely important to them. “I think Luis deserves this, and we are working on it. His contract runs through 2028, but we’ve already begun working to extend it through 2030 or thereabouts. Having him there for the 2030 world stage is extremely important,” Louzán said.
Praising de la Fuente further, the RFEF president added: “His humble conduct and capacity for hard work are what brought us to this historic success, achieved by an unforgettable generation of Spanish national team players.”
Spain is also pushing hard to host the 2030 World Cup final on home soil. Louzán is optimistic about the final as well. In his words: “It would be hard to accept that the final of that great World Cup would not be held in Spain.”
Having won the World Cup, Spain will now embark on a new campaign to defend the title. Keeping de la Fuente in charge over the long term would help maintain the team’s tactical continuity, while also allowing work to continue on developing the next generation of players.
A new test awaits de la Fuente’s side soon, however. Next month, the world champions will face England and Croatia in the UEFA Nations League. At the start of a new cycle after winning the World Cup, Spain will need to prove their mettle right away.
