Migrant boat carrying 100 loses engine mid-river

A small boat carrying roughly 100 migrants, which suffered engine failure near the French coast, was eventually towed to safety by jet ski. The boat had been picking up migrants one by one as they waited in the sea, functioning like a floating “bus stop.”

At that point, the engine came loose and fell off. Police stood by watching as migrants boarded the boat. Once it broke down, they brought in a jet ski to tow it away. The incident took place in the Le Touquet area of France, roughly 40 miles southwest of Calais.

Had the engine not failed, it is believed authorities would have escorted the boat across the English Channel until it reached British waters. The incident has added to pressure on French police to take more effective action to stop migrants from crossing the English Channel in small boats, with particular calls for stricter measures when a boat appears capable of successfully reaching Britain.

At the time of the incident, the boat was dangerously overloaded with passengers. Even so, several more migrants attempted to wade through chest-deep water to board it. It was not immediately clear which countries the migrants aboard the boat were from.
