BEIJING — U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed that the Hormuz Strait must remain open for the unrestricted flow of energy and that no tolls will be levied on the waterway, the White House said.
The two leaders held a two-hour meeting in Beijing on Thursday, May 14. The White House said the two leaders reached agreement on the issue at the meeting.
Asked by reporters how the meeting went, Trump answered with a single word: “Excellent.” A second reporter asked whether he had discussed Taiwan. Trump, continuing in the same vein, said: “Beautiful place, unbelievable, China is very nice.”
When asked again whether he had discussed Taiwan, Trump looked straight ahead. Xi did the same.
This is Trump’s first visit to China since becoming U.S. president for a second term. He arrived in Beijing on Wednesday night and was given a red-carpet welcome. Trump previously visited Beijing in November 2017 during his first term. No U.S. president has visited China since that trip.
