Police in Jaintiapur, Sylhet, have seized 4,341 Indian saris being smuggled in an ingenious way in a truck loaded with sand. The driver, Md Alal, 35, has been detained.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Samrat Talukder, focal point officer of Sylhet district police, confirmed the seizure on Thursday (October 1), saying a case had been filed at Jaintiapur Model police station and the driver sent to court.
Alal is the son of Siddek Ali of Panch Seuti village in East Alirgaon union of Gowainghat upazila.
At around 5:15am on Wednesday (September 30), police set up a checkpoint on the Sylhet-Tamabil highway at the north end of the Sari river bridge in the Nayakhel area of Nijpat union under Jaintiapur police station, searched a sand-laden truck and found a large quantity of Indian saris inside.
Police said the saris were worth about Tk 1.3023 crore. The yellow truck used for smuggling, worth about Tk 25 lakh, was also seized.
