Eight held with 94 stolen mobile phones in Sirajganj

Police have detained eight members of an inter-district theft ring with 94 stolen Android mobile phones in a raid on a Shyamoli Paribahan bus at the Jamuna Bridge west roundabout in Sirajganj.

The bus was searched at a checkpoint at the roundabout at around 11am on Wednesday (September 30), and the eight were detained and 94 phones seized from them.

The detained are Alamin, 30, of Syedpara village, and Israfil Rahman, 27, of Pathanpara village, under Bayezid Bostami police station in Chattogram; Akkas Ali, 35, of Bakalia under Bakalia police station; Md Ridoy, 34, of Ismail Foyez Road under Patiya police station; Md Imran, 30, of Char Madinanagar village under Raipura police station in Narsingdi; Yasin Arafat, 38, of Chakbas Mollabari village under Kasba police station in Brahmanbaria; Md Robiul, 33, of Nowatpur village under Chandina police station in Cumilla; and Alauddin, 25, of Kamalla village under Muradnagar police station.

Jamuna Bridge West police station officer-in-charge Md Amirul Islam said an organised gang cut the shutter of Masud Telecom in Dhunat, Bogura, at around 8am on Wednesday and stole 94 mobile phones, then set off for Dhaka on a Shyamoli Paribahan bus.

Acting on a tip-off, a joint team from Dhunat police, Sirajganj highway police and Jamuna Bridge West police set up a checkpoint at the roundabout, searched the bus, detained the eight and seized the 94 stolen phones.

Police said the phones and the detained are in the custody of Jamuna Bridge West police station. Preparations are under way to file a case at Dhunat police station, and the detained will be handed over to Dhunat police once the legal process is complete.
