  • Sachingprue Jerry to become Chittagong Hill Tracts affairs minister, Shameem Kaisar Lincoln to take over as state minister for religious affairs.
  • Notification could be issued at any time.

Prime Minister Tareque Rahman has taken steps to reshuffle and expand the cabinet in order to add further momentum to the government’s overall functioning.

According to multiple government-linked sources, several more members are being added to the existing cabinet. It has been confirmed that Sachingprue Jerry, the MP elected from Bandarban, will be given the responsibility of Chittagong Hill Tracts affairs minister, and Mohammad Shameem Kaisar Lincoln, the MP for Gaibandha-4, will be given the responsibility of state minister for religious affairs. A notification on this could be issued at any time.

Sources say at least two more people, beyond these two, may be added to the cabinet.

With the addition of new members, reshuffles at several important ministries are also possible. In particular, since Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP’s recently outgoing secretary general, is set to become president, his responsibilities at the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives will need to be reassigned. Sources say the prime minister is also considering changes to the responsibilities of ministers and state ministers at several other ministries.

BNP returned to power after nearly two decades following a decisive victory in the 13th parliamentary election on February 12. The new government was formed under Tareque Rahman’s leadership on February 17.

Including the prime minister, the current government has 24 ministers, 23 state ministers, and 10 advisers holding the rank of minister or state minister.

There has been no reshuffle in Tareque Rahman’s cabinet so far, though Chittagong Hill Tracts affairs minister Dipen Dewan has resigned. State Minister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin is currently handling that ministry’s responsibilities.
