Former prime minister and death-sentenced accused Sheikh Hasina, who is in India, cannot return to Bangladesh and directly surrender without a mutual understanding between the governments of Bangladesh and India, the chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Mohammad Aminul Islam, has said. “If she returns to the country, she will be arrested at the airport and sent to jail,” he said, speaking to journalists at his office at the tribunal on Sunday.

The chief prosecutor said: “Sheikh Hasina is currently in exile under the control of the Indian government. She cannot return to Bangladesh at will like an ordinary citizen. To come to the country, she must come through the diplomatic and legal process of the governments of Bangladesh and India. And the moment she sets foot in the country she will be arrested.”

Answering a question from journalists, he said the investigation into the case of the killings during the Hefazat-e-Islam grand rally at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel on May 5, 2013, had been completed, and that the investigation report would be submitted to the International Crimes Tribunal on July 21.

He also said the investigations into 10 main cases before the tribunal, including atrocities and crimes against humanity committed during the mass uprising of July-August 2024, were at their final stage, and he expressed the hope that the investigation reports in these cases would be submitted to the tribunal very soon.
