National Parliament Speaker Maj (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has called Sheikh Hasina, chief of the now-banned Awami League and the ousted prime minister, the “world’s best actress.”
He made the comment at an exchange meeting with BNP and affiliated organisation leaders and activists in Lalmohan upazila, Bhola, at 11am Saturday (September 12).
The speaker said Sheikh Hasina was the world’s best actress. She would call the families of the forcibly disappeared to Gono Bhaban and comfort their wives and children by stroking their heads, while a ruthless mindset tied to her own involvement in the disappearances lay hidden within her. Sheikh Hasina would reassure the families of the disappeared that their loved ones would be returned, he said, even though she herself knew exactly where those forcibly disappeared were being held. Through this conduct and performance, he said, she played the role of the world’s best actress. At the time, the public didn’t realise it. Now, he said, everything has become clear to the public.
He said that based on testimony and evidence from disappeared individuals presented at the international tribunal, it has now been proven to the public that Sheikh Hasina was the world’s best actress and was herself the one who ordered the disappearances. A barrister was held captive in an “Aynaghar” (mirror house) for eight years. He described the treatment as an act of extreme cruelty and depravity. After Sheikh Hasina fled the country, he said, the barrister was freed and has now become a member of parliament.
On the previous government’s looting, the Bhola-3 MP said the cost of a single pillow was set at 60,000 taka under the Rooppur nuclear power project, while a curtain was priced at 42,000 taka. A land deputy minister at the time owned 360 houses in London, he said. Instead of carrying out the government’s continuous development projects, he said, officials embezzled the funds.
On local politics in Lalmohan, he said the previous government’s local MP here was a top criminal and murderer. In the 2010 by-election, he said, criminals were brought in from Dhaka who attacked the homes of his party workers in broad daylight, hacking them with machetes and vandalising their homes.
