KOLKATA — Suvendu Adhikari is set to be sworn in as the first BJP chief minister of India’s West Bengal state. His name was formally announced Friday as the state’s chief minister.
India’s Union Home Minister Amit Shah, appointed central observer for the election of the state legislative party leader in West Bengal, said Friday afternoon: “I am announcing the name of Suvendu Adhikari as the elected leader of the West Bengal BJP legislative party.”
After announcing Suvendu’s name as the new chief minister, Shah said the new government would make every effort to fulfill the dream of “Sonar Bangla,” or Golden Bengal. He thanked the people of West Bengal for voting against what he called the authoritarian rule of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee.
Shah also thanked all BJP workers who labored day and night to secure what he called a historic mandate in the state. He attended a meeting at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre with the 207 newly elected legislators, where Suvendu was nominated leader of the legislative party.
The newly elected leader, Suvendu Adhikari, was to meet West Bengal Governor T.N. Ravi at Raj Bhavan at 6:30 p.m. Friday to present a letter of consent signed by all legislators and stake his claim to form the government. He is scheduled to be sworn in at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata at 11 a.m. Saturday in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, other BJP leaders and the chief ministers of 21 states.
