MEHERPUR — Border Guard Bangladesh is on its highest alert along the Meherpur frontier to prevent any unrest tied to elections in India’s West Bengal from spilling across the border, officials said. Patrols have been intensified along the entire boundary to deal with any unwanted situation.
Lt. Col. Nazmul Hasan, commanding officer of Chuadanga 6 BGB Battalion, said by phone that patrols at the Meherpur border had been stepped up as a precaution. Additional personnel have been deployed at vulnerable points, and intelligence surveillance has been increased to quickly detect any suspicious movement, he said. Day-and-night patrols are also being run regularly from the various border outposts (BOPs) in the area. The measures are aimed at preventing illegal crossings, smuggling and any potential violence along the border, he said.
BGB is always ready to protect the country’s sovereignty, sources said, adding that local residents have also been urged to stay alert to help maintain peace and stability along the border.
Meherpur district has 18 BGB border outpost camps along its 65 kilometers of frontier.
