Education, Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr. A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milon has said that, to improve the quality of the education system and ensure teachers receive proper respect and recognition, plans have been made to award and honor 100 teachers with 1 lakh taka each to mark World Teachers’ Day.
He shared the plan with journalists Sunday (Sept. 6) before the first meeting of the National Steering Committee, held at the Education Ministry’s conference room at the Secretariat to plan the observance of World Teachers’ Day.
The education minister said, “Our teaching community is the driving force behind change and progress in the education system. Our main goal is to properly recognize, reward and encourage those doing excellent work in the field. On World Teachers’ Day, Oct. 5, we want to remember and honor this contribution by teachers across the country.”
He said a policy to select the best teachers is being finalized. Previously, only 12 teachers received 2 lakh taka each, totaling 24 lakh taka. But Prime Minister Tareque Rahman’s goal is to ensure teachers receive proper respect, and in line with that, the government has decided to expand this scope to recognize skilled and accomplished teachers nationwide. A hundred selected teachers will now receive 1 lakh taka each in awards and recognition.
On teacher conduct, the education minister said teachers illuminate society through their own educated conduct. He said, however, that necessary policies and guidelines are being reviewed, following international standards, to prevent inappropriate activity on social media and protect the image of the education system. On outstanding dues for retired teachers, he said the teachers’ own contribution arrears from 2016 through August 2026 have already been paid, and steps are being taken to gradually pay the remaining government-provided grant amounts.
Responding to a journalist’s question at the meeting, Secondary and Higher Education Division Secretary Md. Abdul Khalek said work is underway to include private-school teachers in the new pay scale, with teachers to receive benefits in the same proportion as government employees.
National Assembly whip Rakibul Islam Bakul, senior Education Ministry officials, and members of the National Steering Committee attended the meeting.
