The identities of 58 of those killed at Hefazat-e-Islam’s grand rally at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel, in the capital, on 5 May 2013 have been confirmed, Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam said. He made the remarks in response to a reporter’s question at his office on Sunday.
The chief prosecutor said the International Crimes Tribunal’s investigation agency had investigated the killings at Shapla Chattar for a long time and, after completing its inquiry, had submitted a draft report to his office. “The report will now undergo a final review, so that a proper investigation report ensures a transparent trial and the actual accused face justice,” he said. “I reviewed the draft report today with Hefazat-e-Islam’s top leaders. I hope to receive the full report soon.”
Asked who would be named as accused, Aminul Islam said: “The names of a few people, including deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and the former police chief and BGB chief, have come up in the report. We are reviewing these. Names of accused may be added or removed after the review.” On those killed, the chief prosecutor added: “We had received a list of 61 people killed, and the identities of 58 have already been confirmed.” Hefazat-e-Islam’s senior nayeb-e-ameer Abdul Hamid, Maulana Mamunul Haque, Mufti Harun Izhar, Mufti Mir Idris and many others were present at the chief prosecutor’s office at the International Crimes Tribunal on Sunday.
