The investigation agency of the International Crimes Tribunal has submitted its report on the killings at Hefazat-e-Islam’s Shapla Chattar rally, naming 41 people as accused, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former army chief General Aziz. The agency handed the report to the prosecution on Sunday morning. Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam confirmed the development, saying the report was now under review and would be submitted to the tribunal on the scheduled date of 21 July.
Other notable accused in the case include the then chiefs of police, RAB and BGB, the DMP commissioner, the former editor-in-chief of Ekattor TV, Mozammel Babu, its former chief reporter, Farzana Rupa, and the former president of the Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, Shahriar Kabir. Prosecutor Mohammad Aminul Islam said the documents were being reviewed thoroughly, and that the investigation had so far found specific information of 32 people killed in Dhaka alone; with the investigation at a final stage, the prosecution said the actual death toll could not yet be confirmed.
A Hefazat-e-Islam delegation went to the chief prosecutor’s office on Sunday morning to learn of the case’s progress. Led by the organisation’s senior nayeb-e-ameer Abdul Hamid (the Madhupur Pir), the delegation included joint secretary general Maulana Mamunul Haque, Mufti Harun Izhar, Mufti Mir Idris and 10 to 15 other top leaders. On 5 May 2013, Hefazat-e-Islam held a rally at Shapla Chattar over a 13-point demand; that night, a joint operation by police, RAB and BGB drew allegations of many casualties, which is now under investigation at the International Crimes Tribunal.
