A brazen robbery took place at the home of an expatriate family in Pirgachha, Rangpur. Robbers made off with roughly Tk 3 million in gold jewelry and other valuables, according to the homeowners’ complaint. Police have already arrested one person in connection with the incident.

The robbery took place at the home of US-based brothers Fazle Elahi Ripon and Fazle Rabbi Rasel in East Para village, Itakumari union, in the upazila, between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m. Monday, August 17. The robbers entered by scaling the wall above a pocket gate on the southwest side of the house.

A visit to the scene found that the robbers had broken open a cupboard with a crowbar. Family members said roughly 10 bhori of gold and cash kept inside had been stolen. Furniture and clothing were found strewn about in disarray.

After being alerted, Pirgachha Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Selim Malik, OC (Investigation) Amirul Islam, and other police personnel visited the scene around 11:30 p.m., where they collected evidence and questioned the household help and nearby residents. The brothers’ uncle, Abdul Khalek Sultan, filed a case at the police station that same night. Police detained a local man, Monu Mia, the same night in connection with the case.

Expatriate Fazle Rabbi Rasel said: “My brother and I are remittance-earners based in America. Our wives and children live in Rangpur city for their studies. We had recently come to Rangpur. Both of us have a return flight to America this coming Friday, August 21. We got a call from the area at 10:00 p.m. Monday saying our house had been robbed. We rushed over from Rangpur and found the cupboard broken open with a crowbar. We want swift action on this.”

Upon hearing the news, Union BNP President Abdur Razzak arrived at the scene that same night. He said: “This is a terrifying incident. These two brothers are remittance-earners. That this could happen at their house is unimaginable. I suspect whoever did this knew the family.”

Rangpur Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mozammel Haque said: “As soon as we heard about the incident, police visited the scene and took the necessary steps. We take matters involving expatriates very seriously. We will try to recover the stolen goods as quickly as possible.”

Rangpur Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Aminul Islam said: “Expatriates keep our economy running. For something like this to happen at their home is deeply regrettable. We have given this our highest priority and instructed police accordingly.”
