India’s Supreme Court has given relief to late former prime minister Manmohan Singh in a coal-allocation case by cancelling the lower court order that had summoned him in a Central Bureau of Investigation case. Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi then criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government.

She said the ruling ended years of allegations and political campaigning against Singh. July 29, 2026, would remain an important but neglected date in India’s political history because the Supreme Court accepted the CBI closure report and cancelled the lower-court order summoning the former prime minister.

Sonia said the controversy was part of a long effort to tarnish Singh and question his integrity, accountability and administrative transparency. She said history would remember him as a quiet, modest and important prime minister who took major steps for the economy, social protection and citizens’ rights during 10 years in office.

She criticised Modi’s past remarks about Singh, including a 2017 Rajya Sabha comment, calling them a low point in parliamentary politics. She also accused the Modi government of using investigative agencies to pressure opposition leaders and said allegations often changed when politicians joined the ruling party.

Sonia highlighted Singh-era economic growth, higher private investment and consumption, and millions moving above the poverty line. She said India remained comparatively strong during the 2008 global financial crisis.
