Bangladeshi-American footballer Cavan Sullivan continues to break record after record in Major League Soccer (MLS). The Philadelphia Union forward has now become the first teenager in MLS history to directly contribute to a goal in five consecutive matches.
The 16-year-old Cavan scored one goal in Philadelphia’s 2-0 win over CF Montreal on Sunday. After Danley Jean Jacques scored for the team in the 57th minute, Sullivan doubled the lead in the 75th. Cavan’s goal came from excellent finishing — after a teammate’s shot inside the box, he quickly read the ball’s path and rushed forward. The young forward evaded multiple defenders and finished into the net with a single shot.
With this goal, Cavan’s tally for Philadelphia this season stands at four, to go with seven assists. That means at just 16 years old, he has directly contributed to 11 goals this season.
Cavan now also holds the new record for the most goal contributions in a single season by an MLS player aged 16 or under. The previous record was held by former U.S. star Freddy Adu, who contributed to 10 goals — four goals and six assists — at age 16 in 2005.
Cavan had earlier set a record for contributing to goals in four consecutive matches. At 16 years and 336 days old, he became the youngest player in MLS history to contribute to a goal in four straight matches. He has now extended that feat by one more match to five. With this kind of performance at just 16 years old, expectations for Cavan are growing across all of MLS.
