Iranian parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has called for preparations to counter the harshest sanctions in history, after the United States announced it would impose them on Iran.

Speaking during a visit to Iraq, Ghalibaf said Iran must plan to confront and overcome the “cruel sanctions” under the current circumstances. He also called for expanding cooperation between Tehran and Baghdad.

According to remarks published on Ghalibaf’s Telegram channel, he said: “If you look at the wealth and raw materials of Muslim countries, you will understand that our enemies are coming to plunder them, so under these circumstances we must plan for harsh sanctions so that we can overcome them.”

Earlier, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the United States would impose its “harshest” sanctions yet on Iran. Recent reports say Washington is planning to further increase economic pressure on Iran.

Ghalibaf, on his visit to Iraq, also called for strengthening cooperation between Iran and Iraq amid the ongoing war.
