Traffic police have filed a case against the vehicle of Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat over reckless wrong-way driving.
The incident occurred Thursday morning on Circuit House Road in Dhaka, a senior traffic police official said.
“A minister’s car was heading the wrong way down Circuit House Road toward the Secretariat at 9:08 a.m.,” the official said. “Traffic police stopped the flag-flying vehicle.”
“The driver was told that driving the wrong way like this is a complete violation of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ordinance. Two cases were filed, with fines of 3,000 taka each, for a total of 6,000 taka,” the official said.
A traffic police officer said the case was filed against the Range Rover’s driver, Arif Hossain, on a charge of reckless driving.
He said that at the time the minister’s car was going the wrong way, the prime minister’s motorcade was traveling along a nearby road toward the Secretariat. Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat was in the vehicle at the time of the incident.
A traffic officer said: “This is the first time in Bangladesh that a case has been filed against a minister’s car for driving the wrong way. It’s unprecedented.”
“There have been media reports in the past of ministers’ cars going the wrong way to reach their destination quickly or avoid traffic, but this is the first time it has resulted in a case being filed,” the officer said.
