If Prime Minister Tarique Rahman feels a cabinet member is not performing well, he will redistribute portfolios or give the responsibility to someone new — though whether this happens after the government’s first 180 days or takes longer is not certain, the prime minister’s information and broadcasting adviser, Zahed Ur Rahman, has said.
Zahed Ur Rahman spoke on Tuesday at a regular news conference at the Secretariat to brief on the government’s recent activities.
A new cabinet was formed under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on February 17. Besides the prime minister, the cabinet currently has 24 full ministers and 23 state ministers, along with 10 advisers with the rank of minister or state minister. Under the rules of business, the prime minister distributes ministry or division responsibilities among ministers and state ministers.
Asked whether there was any talk of a cabinet reshuffle within the BNP government’s first 180 days, the information adviser responded.
“The prime minister has formed a cabinet and an advisory council,” Zahed Ur Rahman said. “From what I understand in conversation with him, if he ever feels someone is not performing well, he will redistribute the portfolio or give it to someone new if needed. Because, at the end of the day, it is about serving the people’s welfare — if there is scope to make his choice or decision better, he will do it. That is my impression from speaking with him personally. Whether this happens after the government’s 180 days or takes a little longer cannot be said with certainty yet.”
A panel of lawyers is being formed to handle legal matters related to curbing cyberbullying and disinformation, the adviser said, adding that a notification could be issued within this week.
The adviser outlined various recent government activities at the news conference. Also present was Principal Information Officer of the Press Information Department Syed Abdal Ahmed.
