Twelve Chinese companies have proposed investments worth $9.21 billion in Bangladesh in the energy, infrastructure, logistics, manufacturing and education sectors, following their meetings with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman during his recent visit to China.
The chief executives and senior representatives of the 12 companies presented the investment proposals during a meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Beijing on 25 June.
Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) executive director Ashik Chowdhury, who was present at the meeting, said on Saturday that political stability had returned to the country after the newly elected BNP government took office, creating renewed confidence among foreign investors.
He added that Bangladesh had, for the first time, presented a five-year tax outlook, highlighting policy stability and a long-term forecast to potential foreign investors.
According to the proposals, Shanghai SUS Environment Company Limited proposed investing $890 million to develop a waste-to-energy (WTE) plant in Bangladesh.
China Future Energy Group Holding Limited proposed $250 million for gas-field exploration and development. China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) proposed $650 million to develop and operate the Mongla Port Economic Zone, including bonded warehouse facilities and logistics infrastructure, expected to create about 50,000 jobs.
Shenzhen Kaifa Technology Company Limited proposed investing $250 million to manufacture electric smart meters. SF Express expressed interest in investing $180 million in cold-chain logistics and bonded warehouse facilities in Mongla to support e-commerce and export industries. Huaxin Textile Industry Co Limited proposed $190 million to expand recycled cotton and yarn production, manufacture cylindrical lithium batteries and set up a 200-megawatt captive solar power plant in the Payra port industrial zone.
Zhongxin Environmental Protection Group proposed $1.65 billion — the single largest environmental investment — to set up e-waste recycling and disposal industry projects in the Payra port industrial zone.
CRRC Jian Co Limited proposed investing $190 million in a rolling-stock assembly plant through a joint venture with the Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory (BMTF). Sichuan Road and Bridge Group Co Limited proposed investing $4.5 billion in a Dhaka-Chattogram highway public-private partnership (PPP) project.
China Kepai Education Group proposed investing $270 million to establish a modern, life-oriented university and technical-education industrial park with a capacity of 30,000 students. China Shandong Zhongxin Pharmaceutical Co Limited proposed $190 million to develop large-scale Chinese herbal cultivation in Bangladesh.
