Police have recovered the body of a retired schoolteacher named Amena Khanam, 65, with her hands and feet tied, from a locked second-floor flat in Amanatganj, Barishal city. Police believe she died at least two days earlier. The door was broken open on Thursday morning in the presence of her elder son, Rifat.
Amena was a retired teacher at Durgapur Government Primary School in Hizla upazila and had lived alone for about a year in a rented flat in a building on Rokeya Azim Road.
Kaunia police station inspector (investigation) Kamal Hossain said her elder son, Rifat, is a bank officer living in the capital for work, and her younger son, Riad, lives at the family home in Hizla. Police went to the flat after a call from the elder son on Thursday morning, found it locked from outside, broke open the door and found her body on the bed with her hands and feet tied.
Police said the body was swollen and smelled, and she is thought to have died at least two days earlier. No visible injuries were found, and a post-mortem has been carried out to determine the cause of death.
Building owner Rina Begum said Amena rented the flat about a year ago, did not mix much with other residents, and her two sons visited occasionally. The elder son was informed after a smell came from the flat. Neighbour Tania said she last saw Amena on Tuesday; seeing the lock outside, she thought Amena had gone away, and the smell began on Wednesday afternoon.
Barishal Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Sushanta Sarkar said police found the flat locked after the son’s call and recovered the body with the hands and feet tied with cloth. An investigation is under way to uncover what happened and arrest those involved, he said.
