Twelve police officers, some with gunshot wounds, were injured during a raid on an organised gang involved in extortion and violent crime in Raozan, Chattogram, as police and gang members exchanged fire. A man named Dildar Hossain was arrested at the scene with a gunshot wound, and a double-barrel gun, a sawn-off single-barrel gun, 119 rounds of Chinese rifle ammunition and six lead cartridges were recovered from him.
The incident happened late on Wednesday night in Jaynagar Barua Para, South Kadalpur, in Kadalpur union under Raozan police station. Chattogram Superintendent of Police Masud Alam gave the details at a press conference at his office on Thursday afternoon.
The injured include sub-inspectors (unarmed) Jannatun Nayeem Rajon, Khorshed Alam, Bayezid Mridha and Md Jahangir Alam, and assistant sub-inspectors Md Jewel Chandra Biswas and Robiul Hossain.
A gang led by Jane Alam alias Dakat Alam and Mohammad Aziz alias Aziz Boss had long been demanding and collecting extortion from individuals and businesses, the SP said. Acting on this information, police raided the front of Jane Alam’s house in Jaynagar Barua Para at 10:40pm on Wednesday.
Sensing the police presence, those inside the house, including Jane Alam, 42, Mohammad Aziz, 52, Dildar Hossain, 37, Md Rubel, 27, Md Mamun-or-Rashid alias Mamun, 35, and Md Bacha, 45, fired indiscriminately at police, he said. Police returned fire in self-defence and brought the situation under control, and 12 officers were injured in the exchange. Legal action is being taken, the SP said.
