Sudden thunder in the sky, flashes of lightning and storms create fear in people’s minds. From an Islamic point of view, these natural events are seen not merely as something to fear but as signs of Allah’s power and a warning.

The scientific explanation of lightning is that it occurs when electrical charge builds up in clouds and is suddenly released. In the Islamic explanation, however, it is seen as a manifestation of Allah’s creation and majesty, reminding people to turn back to Allah. The Quran says that lightning is a sign of fear and hope, and that thunder glorifies Allah with praise. Such verses encourage people to remember Allah’s power even amid this fearsome scene of nature.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught certain supplications and practices for times of storm or lightning. The hadith advise seeking refuge with Allah when a storm begins, reciting particular supplications, and offering prayers and seeking forgiveness (istighfar) in dangerous situations.

There is also instruction to stay cautious from the point of view of practical safety. Experts note that it is important to stay away from open spaces, from under trees or near water, to take safe shelter and to keep away from electrical equipment.

Islam speaks not only of personal safety but also of social responsibility. There is instruction to stand by helpless people during storms, to arrange food and shelter, and to be mindful of protecting animals and birds. According to religious teaching, such natural disasters are an opportunity for a believer to purify themselves and turn back to Allah. Islamic teaching says that, with proper supplication, caution and the fulfilment of humanitarian responsibility, even such disasters can be turned into blessings.
