An overnight clash broke out between students of two departments at Barisal University (BU) over a rejected romantic proposal, involving beatings, chases, and confrontations. Around 20 students are reported to have been injured.

The clashes occurred in several rounds between 9 p.m. Saturday and late into the night, in the university campus and areas near the main gate.

Students said that on the day of the freshers’ reception, Musa Hossain, a 12th-batch student of the English department, proposed a relationship to a female student from the 15th batch of the Economics department. When she did not respond to the proposal, Musa was accused of harassing and “ragging” her. Once word spread, Economics department students gathered. At one point, Musa was beaten, after which a scuffle broke out between students of the two departments.

Several rounds of chases and confrontations continued inside and outside the campus through the night. Economics department students alleged that around midnight, as an ambulance was transporting some injured students to the hospital, the vehicle was stopped near the university’s Gate No. 3 and the students inside were beaten.

Denying the allegation, English department students said the original incident was being exaggerated in reports. Musa, the accused student, could not be reached for comment as he was among those injured.

University Proctor Mehedi Hasan Sohag said both sides have been separated. He said the necessary legal and administrative action would be taken in accordance with university regulations once a written complaint is received.
