Deputy Foreign Minister Humayun Kabir has said discussions are under way between Bangladesh and India on Prime Minister Tareque Rahman’s possible visit to India. However, he said, a date for the visit has not yet been finalized.
He said the prime minister will certainly visit India. Discussions on the visit have resumed. However, a date for the visit has not yet been set. At the same time, he said, there is no possibility of the prime minister visiting India before attending the United Nations General Assembly session.
He shared the information while speaking with reporters at the foreign ministry on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Humayun Kabir said Bangladesh views positively the cancellation, following police intervention, of an Awami League leaders’ gathering in India on August 29.
He said Bangladesh has taken a positive view of the kind of action taken by the relevant Indian authorities. The deputy foreign minister also spoke about various criminals and wrongdoers who fled to India or fled from there and are now staying there.
He said Bangladesh will not shelter any wrongdoer who has fled from India. Likewise, he expressed hope that India, too, would not shelter any wrongdoer who has fled from Bangladesh.
The need for mutual cooperation between the two countries on criminals or fugitives also came up during the discussion. The deputy foreign minister said mutual cooperation is important to ensure that no country becomes a safe haven for criminals. The deputy foreign minister also spoke with reporters about possible cooperation between Bangladesh and the United States in the aviation sector, and about the purchase of Boeing aircraft. He said Bangladesh is not buying Boeing aircraft from the United States under any kind of pressure. Rather, the decision to buy these aircraft is being made based on Bangladesh’s own needs and demand.
