Md Asaduzzaman, minister for law, justice and parliamentary affairs, has said drugs are being smuggled into Bangladesh by drone from a neighbouring country. He made the comment as chief guest at an exchange-of-views meeting with administration officials and political leaders at the Khulna deputy commissioner’s conference room on Monday (September 14) afternoon.
The law minister said drugs are being deliberately pushed in from the neighbouring country. Yaba traffickers sitting across the border are planning operations, using drones to deliver drugs to various locations. Drugs are no longer just Khulna’s problem, he said, which is why greater emphasis is now being placed on dope testing nationwide.
He also said the government is placing importance on education, sports and culture to keep young people away from drugs.
On tackling militancy, the minister said the government will not resort to crossfire to suppress terrorism. Terrorism will instead be tackled by strengthening existing laws where necessary while protecting human rights.
He said the government is six months old and needs time to clear away the mess left behind. He said efforts are under way to treat the rot that has set into the state system. Cultural change has been brought about in six months, he said, and efforts are being made to improve the traffic system.
The meeting, chaired by Khulna deputy commissioner Ms Hure Jannat, also featured remarks from national parliament whip Rakibul Islam Bakul, MP Azizul Bari Helal, MP Amir Ezaz Khan, Khulna City Corporation administrator Nazrul Islam Manju, district council administrator S M Monirul Hasan Bappy, the divisional commissioner, police commissioner, DIG, and senior administration officials.
