Police in Pabna’s Ataikula have arrested Jubo Dal leader Abul Kashem, who is accused of attempting to rape a schoolgirl. He has also been expelled from Jubo Dal over allegations of anti-social conduct.
A team from Ataikula police station arrested him before dawn on Monday (June 15) from the Shahjadpur area of Sirajganj district with the help of technology.
Abul Kashem, who was arrested, is the son of the late Nizamuddin Sheikh of Aria Dangi village in the Ataikula police station area of Pabna. He had been serving as senior vice-president of Jubo Dal in Ward No. 7 of Ataikula union.
Confirming the matter, Ataikula police station officer-in-charge (OC) Mojibar Rahman said: “With the help of technology, we conducted an operation through the night on Sunday (June 14). Before dawn, we arrested him from the Shahjadpur area of Sirajganj district and brought him in. Further legal proceedings are under way.”
Earlier, on Thursday (June 11), an allegation of attempted rape was raised against Abul Kashem over a seventh-grade student on her way home from school. On Friday (June 12), the day after the incident, the student’s mother filed a case at Ataikula police station naming Abul Kashem as the accused.
In protest at the incident and demanding the arrest of the culprit, local people attacked, vandalized and set fire to the accused’s business premises on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Abul Kashem has also been expelled from the party over allegations of anti-social conduct. On Sunday night, he was expelled from all party posts through a press release signed by the union Jubo Dal president, Ektashamul Haque Rajib, and general secretary, Billal Sardar. Leaders and activists were also instructed not to maintain any organizational ties with him.
