District police in Noakhali have detained 67 people in 25 drives against teen gangs at various police stations. Sixty-two of them were later handed over to their families on bonds. Of the remaining five, one was arrested under section 151 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, one was arrested in a regular case, and three were sentenced and fined by mobile courts.
The figures were given in a press release signed by Ahmed Peyar, additional superintendent of police (crime and operations) of Noakhali district police, on Tuesday afternoon (September 29). The drives were carried out across the district throughout Monday.
The press release said the drives were carried out at various police stations on the instructions of Superintendent of Police NM Nasir Uddin to curb teen gang activity, stop teenagers getting involved in crime and ensure public safety.
According to police, 7, 7, 13, 11, 11 and 11 of those detained were handed over to their families on bonds at Sudharam Model, Companiganj, Begumganj Model, Senbagh, Chatkhil and Char Jabbar police stations respectively. At Sonaimuri police station, one person was arrested under section 151 and one in a regular case, and two were handed over to their families on bonds. At Kabirhat police station, three were fined and jailed by a mobile court.
Additional SP Ahmed Peyar said regular drives to curb teen gang crime would continue, along with awareness programmes involving parents, educational institutions, public representatives and people from all walks of life.
