The Deputy Commissioner, Asma Shahin, inaugurated the fair at the Kanaikhali Mini Stadium at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
At the inaugural ceremony, speakers said fruit added variety to people’s diets and was an excellent source of essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre. Eating fruit regularly boosted immunity, they said, so seasonal local fruit should be eaten in every season as a rule, and fruit trees should be planted in home yards, on rooftops and in all suitable places to increase fruit production.
The speakers stressed expanding the fruit market and preservation, extending the season of local fruit through research, and ensuring a fair price in the buying and selling of fruit-tree saplings. They expressed hope that the fruit fair would build a bond between the new generation and local fruit.
The inaugural ceremony, presided over by Deputy Commissioner Asma Shahin, was addressed by the deputy director of the Natore district office of the Department of Agricultural Extension, Md Habibul Islam Khan; the additional deputy commissioner (overall), Md Abul Hayat; the district commandant of the Ansar and VDP, Khondkar Mahbub; and a model fruit-grower, Al Amin. The additional deputy director (horticulture) of the Department of Agricultural Extension, Shamsunnahar Bhuiyan, gave the welcome address.
The fair is displaying 14 common and 23 uncommon local fruits and 25 varieties of mango through 11 stalls. Various herbal items from Natore’s traditional herbal village are also being sold at the fair, as well as fruit-tree saplings.
