Bangladesh Befaqul Madarisil Arabia Director General Mawlana Ubaidur Rahman Khan Nadvi has called on the government not to appoint anyone of a differing ideology as state minister for religious affairs.
Noting that appointing, reshuffling, or reassigning ministers and state ministers is within the prime minister’s authority, he said the government should consider the sentiments of the country’s clerics, spiritual leaders, and devout Muslims before deciding on a state minister for the religious affairs ministry. In a recent piece, Mawlana Ubaidur Rahman Khan Nadvi wrote that, according to a source, a state minister may soon be appointed to the religious affairs ministry. He argued it would be best not to give this ministry’s responsibility to someone whose ideology is seen as divergent by a large portion of the country’s Muslims.
He wrote that the majority of Muslims in Bangladesh follow the Hanafi school of thought. He said ordinary Muslims of Ahle Sunnat wal Jamaat follow one of the four schools of jurisprudence in observing the Quran and Sunnah, describing the flexibility to follow the guidance of respected scholars on various interpretive matters of Shariah as a beauty of Islam.
He argued for appointing someone to the religious affairs ministry whose views align with prevailing religious practice. In this regard, Mawlana Nadvi suggested a Hanafi-following member of parliament could be appointed as state minister.
He warned that a wrong decision on this religiously sensitive matter could trigger a negative reaction among the country’s Muslims, potentially creating misunderstandings toward the government and a negative impact across various segments of society.
