A farmer named Ujir Mondol has been swept away by the current of the Padma river in Bheramara upazila, Kushtia. He fell from a boat in heavy waves while crossing the river at about 12:30pm on Friday (September 25), and the others on board lost sight of him in an instant.
The missing farmer is the son of the late Kheder Ali of the Mondolpara area of Chandgram union in Bheramara upazila.
His younger brother, Nazir Mondol, was also on the boat. “We have land on the Padma char,” he said. “Every day six or seven of us go out to the char together in one boat to do our daily work. Today, too, I had gone to the char with my elder brother Ujir and our uncles.”
“We were coming back in the boat at about 12:30 to say the Friday prayers,” he said. “The Padma is rough now and there were heavy waves. The boat was rocking. Suddenly I saw my brother fall. As I tried to catch him, he was swept away in the blink of an eye. We searched a lot but could not find him.”
Locals said the fire service and many boats have been sent out on the Padma to rescue Ujir Mondol, but the rescue operation is slow because the river is rough.
