Mexico have become the first team to reach the second round of the 2026 World Cup. They beat South Korea 1-0 in their second Group A match in Guadalajara on Friday.

Mexico had earlier beaten South Africa 2-0 in their first match. With two wins, they have six points from two games, while South Korea have three. As the group’s other two teams, South Africa and the Czech Republic, have one point each, Mexico’s place in the top two is already assured.

Mexico’s winning goal, which put them on course to reach the second round with a game to spare, was scored by Luis Romo.

Both teams had started their World Cup campaigns with wins in their opening matches. The first half ended goalless; both sides created chances to go ahead but neither found the goal it wanted.

Mexico went in front in the 50th minute through an error by South Korea goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu. Coming out to claim a cross, he collided with a teammate and dropped the ball. Luis Romo wasted no time in seizing the chance, sweeping a fine volley into the net from inside the box to put Mexico ahead. The goal was entirely the result of a lack of coordination between South Korea’s defence and goalkeeper, and Romo punished the mistake superbly.
