About 4,000 tonnes of diesel, or 4.7 million litres, has arrived from India at the Parbatipur receiving terminal depot in Dinajpur through the India-Bangladesh friendship pipeline.
The diesel was imported as part of the pipeline’s 72nd consignment. Md Rabiul Alam, operations manager of the Parbatipur rail depot in Dinajpur, said the process of handing over the diesel began at 9am on Sunday and ended on Tuesday afternoon.
Under a bilateral agreement of 2018, Bangladesh and India agreed on the import of about 2 million tonnes of diesel over 15 years. Since the pipeline opened in March 2023, Bangladesh has imported 330,087 tonnes of diesel through the line.
The imported fuel is distributed in roughly equal quantities among three state-owned companies: Padma Oil, Meghna Petroleum and Jamuna Oil Company.
The Bangladesh section of the pipeline is 126.57 kilometres long. It runs through various areas of Panchagarh, Nilphamari and Dinajpur to reach Parbatipur.
